Selvedge is a Halifax woodworking studio. We make things from solid hardwood — furniture, boards, and custom pieces built to last. From the edge of the forest.
Made here. Boards ship anywhere in Canada. Furniture delivered locally and across Atlantic Canada.
Selvedge is built around a simple premise: if you are going to make something from wood, make it properly. That means solid hardwood, not veneers. It means joinery that holds, not just glue. It means a finish that is sanded between coats, not sprayed and shipped.
The pieces in this shop are made one at a time, in Halifax, Nova Scotia — selected for their grain, shaped by hand, and finished coat by coat until they are right. No production line. No shortcuts.
The name Selvedge comes from the self-finished edge of woven fabric — the boundary that prevents unravelling, where raw material becomes something complete and purposeful. That is what we try to make: things finished properly, all the way to the edge.
We welcome custom orders. If you have a specific piece in mind, get in touch.
Every piece is built from solid wood — maple, walnut, ash, or oak. No veneers, no MDF, no engineered wood.
All cutting boards and serving pieces are finished with food-grade mineral oil and beeswax. No varnish or polyurethane on food-contact surfaces.
Solid hardwood furniture, properly constructed and finished, outlasts its owners. These are not disposable pieces.
Different dimensions, wood species, stain colour, or hardware. Most things we make can be customised — just ask.

Solid hardwood furniture is heavy and large — a bench weighs 25–35 kg and exceeds standard parcel dimensions. Shipping it by courier or Canada Post at those sizes either isn’t possible or costs more than the piece itself. Rather than bake an inflated flat rate into the price, we quote freight honestly on a per-order basis so you only pay actual cost. For Atlantic Canada customers, we offer personal delivery at a flat rate.
Yes — local pickup in the Halifax Regional Municipality is always free and encouraged for furniture. We will coordinate a pickup time with you once the piece is ready.
Yes. Contact us before ordering and we will obtain a freight quote from a furniture carrier. Freight is at the buyer’s cost and must be confirmed before production begins on a custom order or before payment on an in-stock piece. We use blanket-wrap carriers where possible to avoid crating costs.
Yes. All boards ship Canada-wide via Canada Post Expedited Parcel. Tracking is included. Most boards arrive within 3–7 business days after shipping, depending on destination.
Not at this time. We ship within Canada only.
Hand wash with warm water and mild soap. Dry immediately — do not soak or put in a dishwasher. Re-oil every few months with food-grade mineral oil or a beeswax finish to keep the wood conditioned and water-resistant. Avoid prolonged contact with moisture.
Yes. Most pieces can be built to custom dimensions or in different species. Common hardwoods we work with include hard maple, black walnut, white ash, red oak, black cherry, and eastern white pine. Other species may be available on request. Use the custom order form to get started.
