About Selvedge

The finished edge

Selvedge is a one-person woodworking studio operating out of Halifax, Nova Scotia. The name comes from the self-finished edge of woven fabric — the boundary where raw material becomes something complete.

Every piece is built from solid hardwood. No veneers. No flat-pack components. No shortcuts. The wood is selected for its grain, joinery is cut by hand, and the finish is applied coat by coat until the surface is right.

We make furniture, serving boards, and custom pieces — and we also curate thoughtfully sourced goods for the home. From the edge of the forest.

Our story

The finished edge.

Selvedge is a Halifax woodworking studio. We make things from solid hardwood — furniture, boards, and custom pieces built to last. From the edge of the forest.

Made here. Boards ship anywhere in Canada. Furniture delivered locally and across Atlantic Canada.

The maker

One workshop.
One pair of hands.

Selvedge is built around a simple premise: if you are going to make something from wood, make it properly. That means solid hardwood, not veneers. It means joinery that holds, not just glue. It means a finish that is sanded between coats, not sprayed and shipped.

The pieces in this shop are made one at a time, in Halifax, Nova Scotia — selected for their grain, shaped by hand, and finished coat by coat until they are right. No production line. No shortcuts.

The name Selvedge comes from the self-finished edge of woven fabric — the boundary that prevents unravelling, where raw material becomes something complete and purposeful. That is what we try to make: things finished properly, all the way to the edge.

We welcome custom orders. If you have a specific piece in mind, get in touch.

Solid hardwood only

Every piece is built from solid wood — maple, walnut, ash, or oak. No veneers, no MDF, no engineered wood.

Food-safe finishes

All cutting boards and serving pieces are finished with food-grade mineral oil and beeswax. No varnish or polyurethane on food-contact surfaces.

Built to last decades

Solid hardwood furniture, properly constructed and finished, outlasts its owners. These are not disposable pieces.

Custom orders

Different dimensions, wood species, stain colour, or hardware. Most things we make can be customised — just ask.

How we work

Policies & Shipping

Everything you need to know about ordering, shipping, returns, and custom work.

Shipping

How we ship

Shipping method depends on the type of piece. We have set up three tiers to ensure every order arrives safely without inflating costs unnecessarily.

Tier 1 — Boards & Small Goods

Cutting boards, charcuterie boards, and end-grain boards ship via Canada Post Expedited Parcel to anywhere in Canada. Tracking included on all orders.

Tier 2 — Furniture (Local & Atlantic)

Free local pickup at our Halifax workshop. We also offer personal delivery across Atlantic Canada (NS, NB, PEI, NL) for a flat fee — contact us for a rate before ordering.

Tier 3 — Furniture (Rest of Canada)

Freight shipping to Ontario, Quebec, and western Canada is available by quote only. Contact us before ordering — we will source a freight rate and confirm cost before any payment is taken.

All shipments include tracking. Damage must be reported within 48 hours of delivery with photographs. We package boards carefully with foam padding and corrugated protection.

Ordering

How to order

We do not process payments on the website. All orders are handled by email, keeping things simple and personal.

  2. We reply within 48 hours to confirm availability and provide a total including shipping.
  3. Payment is by Interac e-Transfer to orders@selvedge.ca.

We accept orders from Canada only. Interac e-Transfer is the sole payment method at this time.

Custom orders

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Why don’t you offer fixed-price shipping on furniture across Canada?

Solid hardwood furniture is heavy and large — a bench weighs 25–35 kg and exceeds standard parcel dimensions. Shipping it by courier or Canada Post at those sizes either isn’t possible or costs more than the piece itself. Rather than bake an inflated flat rate into the price, we quote freight honestly on a per-order basis so you only pay actual cost. For Atlantic Canada customers, we offer personal delivery at a flat rate.

Can I pick up furniture from your workshop in Halifax?

Yes — local pickup in the Halifax Regional Municipality is always free and encouraged for furniture. We will coordinate a pickup time with you once the piece is ready.

I’m in Ontario (or BC, Quebec, etc.) and want a bench. Is that possible?

Yes. Contact us before ordering and we will obtain a freight quote from a furniture carrier. Freight is at the buyer’s cost and must be confirmed before production begins on a custom order or before payment on an in-stock piece. We use blanket-wrap carriers where possible to avoid crating costs.

Do cutting boards and charcuterie boards ship everywhere in Canada?

Yes. All boards ship Canada-wide via Canada Post Expedited Parcel. Tracking is included. Most boards arrive within 3–7 business days after shipping, depending on destination.

Do you ship internationally?

Not at this time. We ship within Canada only.

How do I care for a cutting board or charcuterie board?

Hand wash with warm water and mild soap. Dry immediately — do not soak or put in a dishwasher. Re-oil every few months with food-grade mineral oil or a beeswax finish to keep the wood conditioned and water-resistant. Avoid prolonged contact with moisture.

Can I request a custom size or wood species not listed?

Yes. Most pieces can be built to custom dimensions or in different species. Common hardwoods we work with include hard maple, black walnut, white ash, red oak, black cherry, and eastern white pine. Other species may be available on request. Use the custom order form to get started.
